Club Liability Insurance Program

The CSU has implemented club insurance for all 23 CSU campuses. Titled the Club Liability Insurance Program (CLIP), it covers General Liability for claims made both on- and off-campus. 

Major exclusions include:

  1. Automobile Liability
  2. Alcohol furnished at Club Activities/ Events 
  3. Fraternal Organizations (The CSU's insurance underwriter has determined that this pertains to all organizations with Greek letters, including academic and honors societies)
  4. Hazing
  5. Athletic activities
  6. Intentional Discrimination

Farmers Market Insurance

Special Event Insurance

You might need Special Event Insurance if your event meets any of the following criteria:

  • More than 100 attendees
  • Open to the public
  • Minors attending
  • Animals or potentially hazardous activity

If you are having your event on the Cal Poly campus, your organization and event is eligible for CLIP, and need additional insurance, Special Event Insurance may be procured through Cal Poly's Office of Risk Management.

    Insurance for Organizations and Events Not Covered by CLIP

    Some organizations are required to provide their own insurance because Club Liability Insurance Program (CLIP) does not cover them. Examples include:

    • Any club with greek-lettered names, even if you are not a social fraternity or sorority
    • Any club that banks off-campus
    • Any club that conducts activities that are not covered by CLIP

    The Certificate of Liability Insurance should provide Commercial General Liability Coverage of:

    • $1,000,000.00 per occurrence
    • $2,000,000.00 aggregate

    If you are affiliated with an organization, such as a national fraternity or sorority, you can save money by asking for a certificate of liability insurance from them. If you're not sure, you can always ask.

    You should email your affiliated organization to see if they are able to provide this. Here is an example you can copy:

    Subject: Certificate of Liability Insurance Needed

    Hello, 

    We require a Certificate of Liability Insurance. Please reply with a Certificate of Liability Insurance attached with General Liability Coverage of $1,000,000.00 per occurrence and $2,000,000.00 aggregate.
